Post Study Work Netherlands

5241

The Netherlands offers an Orientation Year (Zoekjaar) permit, a one-year post-study work visa for international graduates from Dutch universities to find a job or start a business, allowing work without employer sponsorship during that year. You can apply for this permit up to three years after graduation, giving flexibility to return home first. Successful transition to a long-term permit, like the Highly Skilled Migrant visa, is needed after the year ends.

Key Aspects of the Orientation Year (Zoekjaar):
  • Purpose: To bridge studies and employment, allowing graduates to search for jobs, start a business, or gain work experience.
  • Duration: Valid for 12 months (one year) and cannot be extended.
  • Work Flexibility: You can work in any job during this year; Dutch employers dont need a separate work permit to hire you.
  • Eligibility: For graduates (Bachelors, Masters, PhD) from accredited Dutch universities. Graduates from top-ranked universities worldwide may also qualify.
  • Application Window: You must apply within three years of your graduation date.
  • Transition: Before the year ends, you must find a job that qualifies for a different long-term residence permit (e.g., Highly Skilled Migrant) or leave the country.
How it Works:
  • Graduation: Complete your degree program in the Netherlands.
  • Apply: Apply for the Orientation Year residence permit via the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) website.
  • Job Search: Use the one-year permit to find relevant employment or launch a startup.
  • Switch Permit: Secure a job as a Highly Skilled Migrant or in another qualifying category before the Orientation Year expires.
